The Bridge on the river of Kwai

David Lean directed this movie in 1956. It was based on the novel of French author Pierre Boulle who has been captured and sent to concentration camp by Japanese Army. He inserted his two years of experiences as a POW during WW2. It was about the 258 miles long railway road which was connected from Thanbyuzayat, Burma and Ban Pong, Thailand. That rail road was notorious as death railway because approximately 13,000 allied soldiers and 90,000 labours were died of disease, sickness, starvation and tortures by Japanese soldiers.

The storyline was about a Colonel. Nicholson (starred by Alec Guinness) who has been captured by Japanese forces in Thailand. Later, Col. Nicholson has been sent to concentration camp meanwhile Lieutenant Colonel. Saito (starred by Sessue Hayakawa), the commander of the concentration camp. He wanted to set up a railroad which connect between Burma and Thailand. He wanted to use that railroad to transports supports for the Japanese Army because the sea and the air has been controlled by allied forces. Finally, the American commando squad which has been led by commander Shears (starred by William Holden) who was escaped from that camp but return later with task rescued the POWs. And then POWs and the commando squad demolished the bridge together.

The beauties and wilderness of the jungle is one of the best scenes in this movie. Also gun fight scenes are fascinating and nice. One of my favorite scene is last part where Col. Nicholson wounded and fell on the plunger which was used as detonator for the explosives on the bridge. The bridge was exploded and the train was fell down into the river. This movie achieved six academy awards. They included Best Picture (Sam Speigel), Best Directing (David Lean) and Best Actor in Leading Role ( Alec Guinness) and others awards. This movie has been recognize as one of the greatest film ever made by audiences.
