Japanese famous director Akira Kurosawa directed this movie. It released in 1961. The storyline is about a ronin, a samurai without master. It based on Edo era in Japan. Toshiro Mifune starred as Sanjuro Kuwabatake, the ronin. Sanjuro reached a small Japanese town. Two rival yakuza clans, Seibei and Ushitora, overwhelmed it.

Kurosawa wanted to present the difficulties of citizen in Edo era. Government Authorities corrupted and violence hostile incidents happen everywhere. Sanjuro traveled through the country without a specific destination. When he arrived to the small town, he noticed that two yakuza clans overwhelmed the town. He doubled crossed both of the clan for his own profit because he knew that the citizens will get better life without these yakuza clans. The character of Sanjuro is interesting in this film. Kurosawa always used characters who are kind, brave, loyal and noble. Compared to Kurosawa previous characters, although Sanjuro has tough and mighty appearance. But he was kind hearted. We can see the situation during Japanese feudal period. Kurosawa showed corruptions of government officials. He also showed battles between two yakuza clans. He showed Sanjuro's tricks between the rival clans. The film is about honor, and the dark sides of greed and power. It also shows the struggles of innocent citizens. Audience praise the battles scenes and Toshiro Mifune's sword slashing style. Sergio Leone, who is well known for remaking Kurosawa's films, inspired this film. The famous American actor Clint Eastwood starred in A Fistful of Dollars in 1964.
